About the Gold and Silver Calculator

This dual-metal calculator is designed for investors, collectors, and scrappers who deal with mixed precious metals. By fetching both live gold and silver spot prices simultaneously, you can instantly see the melt value of both metals separately and as a combined portfolio total.

What is the Gold to Silver Ratio?

The Gold/Silver Ratio represents how many ounces of silver it takes to buy one ounce of gold based on current spot prices. It is one of the oldest and most closely watched metrics by precious metals investors.

  • High Ratio (e.g., 85:1 or higher): Silver is considered cheap or undervalued relative to gold. Many investors trade their gold for silver during this time.
  • Low Ratio (e.g., 50:1 or lower): Gold is considered cheap relative to silver. Investors may trade their silver for gold to lock in gains.
  • Historical Average: In modern times (since 1900), the ratio has averaged around 47:1 to 60:1, though historically in ancient times it was closer to 15:1.

How to Calculate Gold Karats

Unlike silver, which uses a 3-digit millesimal system (like 925), gold purity is typically measured in karats (out of 24):

  • 24K Gold: 99.9% pure gold (The standard for bullion bars and some coins).
  • 22K Gold: 91.6% pure gold (Common in high-end Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry).
  • 18K Gold: 75.0% pure gold (Premium fine jewelry standard in Europe).
  • 14K Gold: 58.5% pure gold (The most common jewelry standard in the United States).
  • 10K Gold: 41.7% pure gold (Durable jewelry, the lowest legal karat standard in the US).

Selling Mixed Scrap

When selling both gold and silver to a dealer, it's crucial to calculate them separately. Because gold is far more valuable per gram, dealers will often offer different discount rates. For example, a dealer might pay 95% of gold melt value, but only 85% of silver melt value. Using this Gold and Silver Calculator ensures you know precisely what the raw metals are worth before negotiating.
